Quote of the week
I am currently working on a new sculpture but as of now have not decided a name for it. It is going to have a rigid and more simplified look like a Hawaiian tiki or whatever you call it. It is starting to come along pretty good as the clay hardens and I can get more done on it. I am shooting to get it pretty much done by Friday at the latest Monday so I can start letting it dry.
The past two weeks in my painting class I have been using cardboard instead of canvas to kind of free up and find a direction. I have been painting some sort of wildlife for the most part and am starting to feel like I am finding a direction. I have an idea for my next painting I think for this one I will also start with cardboard to experiment and do it again on canvas when I get results that I like.
"Cricket man" is finally finised. The only thing left to do for this sculpture now is to wait for it to get fired so I can paint it. I am still going to go with iridescent black purple paint, and am still deciding on wire or nylon bristles for the hairs. That also reminds me that I need to add two more holes on the head before it is fired for antennae.

Quote of the week
[to everyone in the church] I have something to say! It's better to burn out, than to fade away!
The kurgin, Highlander
Since I will be wrapping up cricket man soon I am about ready to get started on my next project. For this one I will be attempting to do most of it from home. I have already been running ideas through my head on the process for this one. It has already been established last week that I will need to use wires for the base but I will also need to get the clay ready today so I can start letting it dry. If I Don't start letting it dry it will be awhile before I can work with it because soft clay is to much of a pain in the as for me to sculpt with.
My current sculpture "cricket man" is coming along better than I planned so far. I think I want to put some insect mandables on it eventually, probably something like the predator. It should be dry enough by now to finish carving the base and working on the finer details. Using fired glaze that I can polish for the eyes is most likely the next step that I will be taking.

Quote of the week
I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like [sniffing, pondering] victory.

I am still working on patience when it comes to painting. When it comes to things like sculpting from clay and drawing it is much easier for me to make things from memory because I can easily make corrections on the spot. If I try this approach in painting, I usually make things worse by trying to paint over things right away instead of letting paint dry first. This complicates things for me because I am more comfortable working fast in other mediums expecting mistakes or things I don't like, but being able to correct them without effort and continue working. I need to continue working on an approach to painting I feel more comfortable with so I can focus more on my content, and the flow of the painting instead of my next move on the canvas.

I realized that for me when it comes to painting I have been going in with little idea of what I want to do, and try to force things to happen when the paint is way to thick and wet. I think I have the right idea so for, but I just need patience when it comes to letting the paint dry as well some sort of idea when I put paint to canvas. Tomorrow I am going to paint over one of my pieces of shit and see what happens.

Inspirations
I would like to focus more on print making more in the future. It is an area that didn't quite catch my interest until I actually tried it and now is one of my favorites. I think the etching and carving of the plate kind of reminds me of sculpting and is what draws my interest.
Past and Present Works
While I am currently working on a Mexican firepit, also known as a chimeneas, my past works at Defiance College involved print-making, painting, and sculpting. I would like to concentrate more on print-making, but as it is not offered this semester I will not focus on it as I did last year. I looked through images to find an inspiring chimeneas design. I will be checking out different designs to give me more inspiration to decide how to decorate the firepit I am working on.
